About
Research aims include especially the greater integration and use of GIS within remote sensing, geographic and geological research projects, and in particular the better integration of scientific modeling with GIS; provision of GIS analysis via the Internet; use of GIS and remote sensing for analysis of the urban environment; and satellite-based techniques, especially synthetic aperture radar.
I'm the UK academic representative to EuroSDR which co-ordinates research between 17 of the national mapping and cadstre agencies (NMCAs) of Europe. I'm on the UK Location Programme's User Group and on the GISRUK conference steering committee. The GISRUK conference in 2010 will be held at UCL. I've been working with an SME, ImageCat, on the response of SAR images to flooding in urban areas, particularly in New Orleans following Huricance Katrina.
In GIS, I'm interested in the interface between formal, OGC- or SDI-based online GIS and informal, mashup-style online content, and the information available from user generated content. Current PhD student research topics include Anna Bakare's investigation of advanced statistical methods for predicting seabed morphology using a GIS framework; Byron Antoniou's work to examine what an NMCA like the Ordnance Survey can get from volunteered geographic information; Xuelin He's work on a GIS framework for managing information about inland waterways; and Sakpod Tongleamnak's research of the interface between GIS city models (especially CityGML-based models) with building information models (BIMs, especially BuildSmart IFC models).
