About

My PhD research investigates the commercial network that existed between Liverpool and New York during the period of 1763 to 1833. This transitional era is essential to the development of modern international economic expansion as it experienced not only the American Revolutionary war from 1775 - 1783 but also a major credit crisis in 1793, the end of the British Slave Trade in 1807, the French Wars from 1793 – 1815 and the Anglo-American War of 1812. This project will identify merchants working together on both sides of the Atlantic in order to investigate the complicated trade relationships that grew and changed during this period. Using a variety of quantitative and qualitative sources, this project also aims to understand the trading culture of the Liverpool-New York merchant network and how it both coped with, and was changed by, the events of this period.
