I am currently in the final stages of my PhD at the University of Nottingham (expected submission: summer 2010). My thesis, Conceptualizing Horizontal Politics, uses Michael Freeden’s ideas of conceptual morphology and the empirical literature from non-hierarchical political movements to establish whether such movements have a distinct ideology.
I hope in future to expand on my doctoral dissertation with fieldwork and participant observation, but also have research interests in social movements and ideologies more generally. I have a piece called ‘The Situationist Legacy - Revolution as Celebration’ forthcoming in a collection called Sixties Radicalism and Social Movement Activism: Retreat or Resurgence?, edited by Bryn Jones and Mike O’Donnell (Anthem Press). I have also presented work from my thesis at conferences in Warwick, Bristol, Manchester, Essex, and Birkbeck, as well as events hosted by my home department at Nottingham.
Prior to commencing my doctorate, I studied Politics at Warwick and then completed two MAs, in Critical Theory and Politics and Political Theory (Research). These included a range of research methods training.
During the course of my studies, I have been part-time/sessional tutor in both the University of Nottingham School of Politics and Nottingham Trent International College. I have taught courses, at both undergraduate and PG Dip levels, in history of political thought, the theory and practice of liberal democracy, and European politics, and also assumed pastoral responsibility for first-year international students at Diploma and Graduate Diploma levels.
I also served as membership secretary for the PSA Anarchist Studies Network (2008-09) and chaired my School’s teaching circle (2008-9 and 2010-present).
I am currently working as a teaching assistant in the Philosophy department at the University of Stirling, and doing corrections on my thesis.
