Thesis Title: Guilt, Redemption and Reception: Representing Roman Female Suicide

About

I am interested in the representations and roles of women in ancient Rome, particularly as presented by the Roman male elite. I was awarded my PhD in December 2011. My thesis examined portrayals of female suicide in literary works from Augustan Rome, the first and second centuries AD, and late antiquity. One of the main aims of this research was to investigate how political, historical and social contexts of these different time periods impact on the appropriation and formulation of the female suicide motif by a variety of writers in different genres. My current and future research plans include looking at later portrayals of classical female suicides in medieval and early modern contexts, and an exploration of representations of female hegemony in Latin literature.
